Union Pacific has taken delivery of the first two of four Wabtec FLXdrive battery-electric locomotives, RailTech reported. The locomotives arrived at the West Colton yard in Bloomington, California, as part of an operational testing program. [1]
The railroad announced the arrival of the first two units on September 23, according to RailTech. The company expects to receive the remaining two battery-electric units at a later date to complete the test fleet. [1]
Union Pacific is a Class I freight railroad that operates 8,300 locomotives across 32,200 route miles in 23 American states. It is the second-largest railroad in the United States after BNSF. [7]
The testing initiative is designed to evaluate battery-electric technologies in real-world rail environments. The trials will help determine how zero-emission locomotives can be integrated into heavy freight rail operations. [1]
