FlySafair pauses new routes as rising airfares depress passenger demand

South African carrier FlySafair is focusing on existing domestic routes as higher ticket prices reduce booking conversion rates and soften overall flight load factors.

FlySafair is prioritizing expansion on its established routes rather than developing new market connections, eTNW reported. High airfares and increasing price sensitivity among South African travelers have made stimulating new travel demand more difficult for the carrier. [1]

According to eTNW, FlySafair Chief Marketing Officer Kirby Gordon stated that booking windows remain relatively consistent. However, higher ticket prices are directly impacting conversion rates. Gordon explained that fewer customers are completing purchases at current fare levels, leading to softer flight load factors and a smaller proportion of flight searches converting into confirmed bookings. [1]

FlySafair holds approximately 60 percent of the South African domestic market share by seat capacity and carries more than 30,000 passengers daily. The low-cost airline holds full International Air Transport Association Operational Safety Audit certification, which was last audited in July 2023. [3]

The operational shift comes as high fares continue to affect traveler conversion across the regional aviation market. Travelers should expect FlySafair to focus capacity on its current network rather than launching new regional options in the immediate term. [1]
