Indian Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat announced at the World Travel and Tourism Council summit in Malta that India aims to increase its annual foreign visitor arrivals to 100 million by 2047. Skift reported that the country currently records 9.2 million international arrivals, even as foreign visitor numbers have been falling. [1]
To achieve the growth target, Shekhawat outlined a strategy centered on four core principles: political will, public spending, partnership, and people participation. However, Skift reported that the government has not yet published a detailed operational roadmap to reach the 100 million figure. [1]
Separately, NDTV Profit, Travel World Online, and the World Travel and Tourism Council confirmed that India has been selected to host the WTTC Global Summit in Delhi in 2027. Travel World Online noted that the upcoming summit will focus on attracting investment into the Indian tourism sector. [2][5][6]
At the Malta event, the World Travel and Tourism Council also announced initiatives for small and medium enterprises. Reports from eTurboNews and Hospitality Net stated that the organization aims to support one million tourism businesses through its Together in Travel community initiative. [3][4]
