Turkish ministers formally inaugurated the 153-kilometer Cerkezkoy to Kapikule rail line on October 9, RailTech reported. The route forms part of the larger Halkali to Kapikule railway, creating a double-track, electrified main line stretching from Istanbul to the border with Bulgaria. [1]

The opening ceremony was attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan alongside Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu, according to RailTech. The new infrastructure represents the latest phase in upgrading rail transit routes between Turkey and European networks. [1]

Turkey has functioned as a unitary presidential republic under President Erdogan since 2018. The nation operates an upper-middle-income emerging market economy driven by manufacturing, exports, and tourism. [2]

The completed section is designed to improve capacity and travel efficiency along a key overland transit corridor connecting Turkey directly with neighboring European nations. [1][3]
