An American Airlines Boeing 737-800 made an emergency landing at Chicago O'Hare International Airport on Friday afternoon after smoke entered the cabin. Paddley Too and NBC 5 Chicago both report that flight AA-618 returned to the airport shortly after taking off, following an in-flight incident. [1][2]
According to Paddley Too, the aircraft departed Chicago O'Hare at approximately 12:19 pm before the crew initiated an immediate return. Flight attendants suspected a fire had broken out in a trash container located in the rear galley of the plane. [1]
An emergency landing involves an immediate forced return or diversion to the nearest suitable airfield when an aircraft encounters an ongoing threat to safety. Emergency aircraft receive priority handling from air traffic controllers over all other traffic. [11]
The incident follows a separate transatlantic disruption earlier this month. As FTMQ Travel reported earlier, a British Airways Boeing 777 bound for Chicago was forced to turn back to London Heathrow on October 5 after a cabin depressurization incident occurred over Ireland. [12]
