The government of Zimbabwe has approved the country's accession to an international treaty intended to make private sector financing for railway rolling stock both easier and cheaper, RailTech reported. The agreement establishes a standardized international framework to protect the rights of creditors. [1]
The legal mechanism involved is the Luxembourg Rail Protocol to the Cape Town Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment. According to RailTech, this treaty provides an internationally recognized legal framework that secures creditor rights over rolling stock. [1]
The territory was colonized as Southern Rhodesia in the late 19th century and unilaterally declared independence as Rhodesia in 1965. Following a protracted conflict, majority-rule elections took place in 1980. [3]
The approval of the treaty is expected to open up new financing avenues for railway equipment in the country, RailTech reported. [1]
