New York City residents are taking commuter trains within city limits at record rates because of discounted fares, Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials said on Wednesday. Streetsblog New York City reported that total ridership on the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad has almost returned to pre-pandemic levels. [1]

The growth is largely driven by riders inside the city using City Tickets, according to Streetsblog New York City. The tickets cost 5 dollars for off-peak journeys and 7 dollars during peak hours. The transit agency expanded these flat-rate tickets from a weekend deal in 2022 to cover weekday trips as well. [1]

Ridership at rail stations located within the city has grown 180 percent compared to four years ago, Streetsblog New York City reported. The city also operates an extensive subway network, local bus routes across all five boroughs, and a municipal ferry system. [1][2]
