Transmashholding has finished assembling Russia's first passenger trainset powered by hydrogen fuel cells, RailTech and Railway Gazette International both report. The train was built at the Demikhovo manufacturing factory. It is intended for passenger operations on Sakhalin island. [1][2]
RailTech reported that assembly work is currently underway on a second trainset at the same location. The development program aims to produce the first hydrogen-powered passenger train in Russia. It is also designed to create a unified low-floor train platform for future urban, suburban, and regional rail routes. [1]
Transmashholding operates more than a dozen manufacturing plants predominantly in Russia and supplies rolling stock to Russian Railways as well as municipal metro systems. The company is completely owned by Russian shareholders following the departure of foreign partners, including Alstom, which previously held a 20 percent stake. [5]
The upcoming test location on Sakhalin island is fully under Russian sovereignty, with an economy largely driven by offshore hydrocarbon extraction. The new hydrogen project introduces alternative propulsion technology to the island's rail network. [1][6]
