Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay opened the first section of the Chennai Metro Yellow Line on October 11, according to RailTech. Inaugural passenger services began on October 11, followed by full operational services the next day. [1]
The newly opened elevated stretch spans 15 kilometres between Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani, as reported by RailTech, Railway Gazette International, and IndexBox. RailTech and Railway Supply both report that the route includes 11 stations, with stops serving Porur Junction, Porur Bypass, Iyappanthangal, and Vadapalani. [1][2][3][5]
RailTech and DT Next report that no fewer than 25,474 passenger journeys were recorded during the first five hours of service. However, the New Indian Express reported that commuters expressed concern over trains operating with only three coaches. [1][4][6]
The route forms the first operational stretch of Phase II Corridor 4, designed to connect the western suburbs with the city center to reduce travel times. The metro network is operated by Chennai Metro Rail Limited, a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu. [1][7]
