ITA Airways Plans First Long-Haul Milan Flight to Block Emirates

Italian flag carrier ITA Airways is planning its first long-haul service from Milan Malpensa to counter expanded flight applications by Emirates.

ITA Airways is preparing to launch its first long-haul flight from Milan Malpensa Airport, Paddley Too and PYOK reported. The move is designed to thwart plans by Dubai-based airline Emirates to expand its presence in the region with new fifth-freedom routes to the Americas. [1][6]

The competition follows efforts revealed in August by Emirates to gain additional market access in northern Italy. As FTMQ Travel reported earlier, Emirates sought fifth-freedom flight rights to operate direct routes connecting Milan to both Lima and Los Angeles, which Italian airlines united to oppose. [1][10]

ITA Airways is the flag carrier of Italy and is owned by the Italian government's Ministry of Economy and Finance alongside the Lufthansa Group. The airline has not operated long-haul flights out of Milan Malpensa prior to this planned expansion. [1][6][9]
