The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority plans to begin rolling out modern ticket gates across the Subway network. RailTech and Railway Gazette International both report that the decision follows a pilot project at 20 stations, which reduced fare evasion by an average of 35 percent. [1][2]

RailTech reported that the trial tested modern gates built by three different manufacturers. The new equipment is intended to replace the current tri-wheel turnstiles, which the transit agency began installing in the early 1990s. [1]
